What are Botulinum toxin ( Botox®)) injections used for? Every time we laugh, smile or frown, Dynamic Wrinkles are created by the contractions in our delicate facial muscles. Over time, these 'contractions' leave us with what we know as frown lines, crow's feet and laughter lines. By blocking impulses from the nerves to our tiny facial muscles, temporarily relaxing them so that they don't contract, Botox™ softens the appearance of these lines. While the untreated muscles react in a normal way allowing facial expressions to be unaffected, the skin itself remains smooth and unwrinkled. The improvement can be surprisingly dramatic.
It is also used for preventing excessive perspiration in underarms and hands.
Is it safe? Botox has been used for over 30 years without any known long-term problems.
How does it work? The Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve transmission to the muscles under the skin. Facial lines formed by the dynamic action of underlying muscles will then diminish or disappear.
Who is suitable for Botulinum toxin? IWe will assess your suitabitiy during your consultation. Most people are suitableapart from those who are pregnant or breast feeding.
Are Botox® injections painful? No, you may experience a slight temporary discomfort or stinging sensation.
Can these treatments be used with Restylane, Perlane or laser treatment? The treatments are complementary and it has been reported that Restylane or Perlane lasts longer when associated. This is because the continuous movement of the muscles is eliminated, slowing the body's breakdown of the injected product.
Note: It is not possible to carry out both treatments at the same time; it would be necessary to carry out the muscle-relaxing treatment first, followed by Restylane or Perlane one month later.
How will I look after the treatment? There is a slight redness immediately after, which settles within a couple of hours.
What can and can't I do after the treatment? Within 4 hours of the treatment people are advised not to do vigorous exercise, drink excessive alcohol, lie down flat or bend forward. Otherwise life can carry on as normal.
When will I notice a difference?It starts to work in about 2-5 days. The greatest effect is seen after about 1-2 weeks.
How long will it last? 3-6 months depending on each individual’s own response. Repeat treatments have been shown to last longer.
What are the side-effects? It is a very safe treatment. However, side-effects can occur but are rare. They can include slight bruising at the injection site, slight drooping of the eyelid which would only last for a week or so, and headaches..
