Melasma / Chloasma
Some women notice the appearance of dark patches on the face after pregnancy? It can be very distressing for those of us who suffers with it. Here are a few answers to some of the questions you may have.
What is melasma/chloasma?
Hormone fluctuation can increase the production of the skin’s pigment – melanin. It is a very common problem in pregnant woman, especially those with a darker skin tone. It is often seen on the face, where it may appear as darker patches or a mask-like darkening of the cheeks, known as 'chloasma'. Elsewhere on the body, it is known as 'melasma'. Because it is related to increased levels of circulating hormones it can also be seen in some women who take the oral contraceptive, though far less commonly and to a much lesser degree.”
Will it get better?
Pregnant women usually find the pigment settles and fades after delivery. The problem is made worse by sunlight, so those affected, even those with darker skin, should always wear a broad spectrum, high SPF sunscreen. It is recommended that women taking the pill should stop or use proper sun protection and the pigment will often, though not always, fade with time.
What treatments are available?
Topical treatments can work in various ways. Some literally 'bleach' the skin and should be avoided, whilst others inhibit the synthesis of melanin in the skin by the melanocytes (pigment producing cells). We recommenc products with botanical ingredients, which are safe and gentle. We will advise you on safe treatment during pregnancy and lactation.
Laser treatment may be useful and topical therapies such as SkinCeuticals Topical Vitamin C Serums and SkinCeuticals Phyto + can produce excellent results.
SkinCeuticals® Topical Vitamin C
Scientific research shows that L-ascorbic acid is the only form of vitamin-C the body can use when applied topically. Science also proves that L-ascorbic acid is essential for the production of collagen that it photo-protects and offers anti-inflammatory benefits. New studies from Duke University show that L-ascorbic acid in a 20 per cent concentration delivers more vitamin-C to the skin than 15, 25 or 30 per cent respectively - making it the optimal concentration for antioxidant protection. All SkinCeuticals products are developed to work synergistically with the vitamin C serums, which can be applied once a day in the morning.
SkinCeuticals® Topical Vitamin-C High Potency Serum 15
Using the latest developments in topical vitamin C, High Potency Serum 15 is a fifteen per cent concentration of stabilised L-ascorbic acid in an aqueous solution. L-ascorbic acid is proven to improve skin elasticity; fight free radicals and help rebuild collagen so will reduce and help prevent the signs of ageing. High Potency Serum 15 will visibly improve skin clarity, tone and texture and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles leaving skin with a firmer, smoother, younger looking appearance. Use up to six drops once a day prior to moisturisation.
SkinCeuticals Phyto +
SkinCeuticals Phyto + is an advanced skin-lightening formula with four active ingredients that work synergistically to lighten and improve the overall appearance of the skin while offering superior antioxidant protection.
Extensive research and expertise in the field of phytobotanicals led to the development of this highly effective skin lightener. Its never before available combination of tyrosinase inhibitors (Arbutin, Kojic Acid and Thyme) work to prevent the conversion of tyrosine into melanin, while cucumber soothes and breaks up melanin deposits. Phyto + is a gentle, yet equally effective alternative to potentially irritating chemical skin lighteners, such as hydroquinone. Phyto + can be applied once a day in the evenings.
